Why don’t Baseball fans support both teams in their home state?

Right off the bat, forgive the pun, you got the pun—right?
Right off the bat you can tell I’m not a true fan.
No true fan would ever have to ask the question.

California has two Major League Baseball teams.
*Correction: California has 5 MLB teams.
This post was better when there were only 2.

Anyway, as I was saying, they—meaning the LA Dogers & SF Giants, have a rivalry that goes back a long way.
It’s Baseball’s version of the Hatfields & the McCoys.
Some have called it the greatest rivalry in sports history.
It has it’s roots buried in the long-ago history of both teams when they were based in New York City.
The Dodgers were from Brooklyn and the Giants played at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan.
How’d they both end up in California?

Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley decided to move the team to Los Angeles for financial and other reasons.[4] Along the way, he managed to convince Giants owner Horace Stoneham (who was considering moving his team to Minnesota) to preserve the rivalry by bringing his team to California as well.

Fast forward to the current season.
In my family we have Giants fans and Dodger fans.
My Mom and brother root for the Giants and my son-in-law and husband support the Dodgers.

Here’s the part I don’t get.
If one team bombs, why not switch and root for the ones that are doing better?
I mean, at some point it becomes obvious that the Giants are gonna have to live to play & win another day.

The Dodgers are currently in 1st place.
Giants’ fans hate that.

Does this seem irrational to anyone else?
Am I the only one who thinks it’s great to have two teams in our state?
It like doubles our chances of having a winning team?
If your 1st pick isn’t performing, just switch and support the other team.

When I asked this question at a family gathering you’d have thought I was advocating drowning kittens.
The outcry was horrific.
“What?”
“You can’t do that!”
“Dodgers fans are loyal fans. We support ’em no matter what their stats look like.”
“Hey, the Giants won the World Series in 2012. Remember?”
“We don’t just quit ’em in a slump.”

OK.
I don’t understand, but I won’t ever make that stupid suggestion again.
Now I’m questioning my own capacity for loyalty.
Now I feel like a user, just in it for the win.

But, it’s just a game, right?
I mean it’s not like asking someone to give up the moral high ground and switch from Coke to Pepsi.
Don’t even suggest it.
Not to me.
That’s never happening.
Ever.
