Are you and your spouse in sync?

Marriage is suppose to provide each one with a built in support system.
Somebody who’s ‘got your back’.
In the New Testament we find out that God uses marriage as a symbol of Christ’s relationship with His church. So, we should treat it with the importance it deserves.

Life gets crazy sometimes. The busyness, the stresses, can pull your in opposite directions.

But life is a lot more fun when you’re both headed the same way, working towards the same goals, and united in your commitment to the priorities you’ve chosen as a couple.

There’s a lot in American culture that works against marriage.
Attitudes that set people up for failure.

  • Our national obsession with self eats away at the ‘we’ that’s at the heart of every marriage.
  • Parenting can put a couple in a tailspin. Because let’s face it, you can’t put your marriage on the back burner for 10 years while you have 3 kids and get them all in school, without doing some serious damage.
  • The American dream of ‘owning everything in sight’ can suck the life out of a once great relationship.
  • A culture fixated on sex, not love, just sex, creates unrealistic expectations and those lead to disappointment.

How do you protect yourselves and your marriage?

Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.
Proverbs 4:23

Geese keep it simple.
They find a mate and then set about having a family.
Everything they do is directed at gathering food, finding a good spot to raise their young, and doing what they do in tandem.
They co-operate because the job of life is too big for either of them to handle it alone.

We could learn a lesson from geese.
You’ll say I’m oversimplifying things a tad.

Complication is exactly what puts so much pressure on couples and ends up fracturing a marriage.

Jesus told us to pray for our daily bread.
Not to worry about a 401K and whether or not Social Security will still be mailing checks in 30 years.

He told us to give God our hearts completely, without holding anything back.
And to give Him first place in our lives.

Just do that.
And love your husband or wife. Love like God loves.
Here’s how He loves,

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 New Living Translation

Sometimes we need to step back and catch our breath and regain perspective.
This is a long weekend.
If you feel you and your spouse are drifting, being pulled by different currents—do something about it.
Speak up and say, this is too important to me, this marriage with you, to let the distance between us grow.

Turn it around and get close again.
Get in sync with God’s plan for you as a couple.
Go back to your first love.
The one that brought you to each other and made you feel you could handle anything together.
