Yep, I’m the only one awake on this plane not wearing a Lufthansa uniform. I’m lousy at sleeping on planes. It is frankly a weird feeling, but when out of boredom I raise the window shade I realize the upside.
For the first time ever we are flying over the Great Sahara in daylight.
Flying over the Sahara I had to acknowledge what a good thing it was that I can’t sleep on airplanes. Thirty years ago I was one of just a handful of the 415 passengers on board an SAS flight still awake. Standing near the exit door with the flight attendant, she pointed out through the small window the fjords starkly visible from 40,000 feet on a clear moonlit night. Seeing the lonely beauty of the Sahara brought to mind that nighttime glimpse of the fjords.
I’m so thankful I didn’t sleep through either opportunity!
