Each of us can make something today.

No slackers on Thursdays, remember the All Skate at the Roller Rink—everybody needs to participate.

There’s something here for everybody, for you, and her, and him, and them, and those people over there at the water-cooler, and the ones in line at Starbucks, and the Moms in the drop-off line at the elementary school.

Today you can:

Make a new start on an old project.
Yep, it’s time to revive that once great intention of yours, dust it off, put in some new batteries and make some progress.
I learned this from a book by David Allen called Getting Things Done—when a project stalls out you have to find out what’s blocking progress.  Ask yourself this, “what do I need to do, buy, or resolve for this to go forward?”
Now you know the next step you have to take.
Do that enough times and your project will be finished.  Such an empowering word, finished.
I like how that sounds.

Make a clean break of a bad habit.
We all need more discipline, we need to make more healthy choices with our diet, time, or finances.
Show yourself a little tough love and step away from the donuts, or turn off notifications from social media.
Self control is like psychological muscle, the more we use it the stronger it gets.
Pick an area where you’ve cut yourself too much slack and make a change for the better.

Make a call.
In person is best, a phone call is runner-up.
Talk to someone you’ve been neglecting.
A few nights ago I saw part of the old movie Peggy Sue Got Married.
By some quirk of the Universe Peggy ends up 25 years back in time in her family home and reliving her high school years.  One day after school she answers the phone in the hallway and it’s her Grandmother on the line.
You and I aren’t gonna get that chance.
If you’re lucky enough to still have your Grandmother around—make the call today.

Make a clean sweep.
Roll up your sleeves and clean something up.
The kitchen, the garage, the pile on your desk, or the one on the closet floor.  Clean out the car, the pots on your patio, or the junk in your purse or gym bag.  Clean out the refrigerator 😉  Pick one thing and make it shine, make it fresh, make it livable, and make it beautiful again.

Make sense of a problem.
Solving life’s problems would be easier if they were like math problems.
Math has laws of operations and logical steps that lead to solutions, but life is messy and relationships are like tangled yarn the cat’s been playing with.
I’ve found that I have a lot more success making sense of difficult situations if I can tamp down the emotion.  Anger, frustration, and hurt put us in a defensive mode.  Our muscles tense and we brace for impact.
Take a step back from your feelings and try to see the situation, the problem, from the other person’s perspective.  Think honestly about your previous interactions, the tone of your voice, and the words you used.  Were you sincere or sarcastic?  Accusatory or conciliatory?  How was it received?
What’s your desired outcome?  Now what does the other person want?  If you were a non-involved party, how would you structure a solution?  Can you live with that?

Make dinner.
Find a new recipe, shop, and cook for the people you love.
I found an awesome website for new recipes at http://food52.com/recipes  It can be something delicious like meatballs, comforting like Mac & Cheese, or super easy like this https://food52.com/recipes/32773-penne-with-chicken-chorizo-and-chile

Make love.
One of the enduring benefits of marriage is the deep connection and pleasure of making love.  It’s holy, it’s healthy, and it’s free.  It’s comforting after a bad day, and a great way to make a good day even better.

Today you can make money, make time, make amends, or make a memory.
You can make it fun, make it right, or make it stop.
You can make something today.

What are you gonna make?

Got anything to add to the lists?
