A man is already halfway in love with any woman who listens to him.
Brendan Francis

How well do you know your husband?

This year we’ll celebrate our 30th anniversary and yet this week I learned something new about my guy.  That’s great because it opened up another way to show him how much I really love him.

Credit for my most recent discovery goes to Selland’s.
It’s a great little eatery near where I get my allergy shots.  I have to wait at the Doctor’s office 30 minutes after I get my shots, so I drop by Selland’s first and grab a little lunch to eat in the car while I wait and hope that there’s not an EpiPen in my immediate future.

They sell a wonderfully delicious Broccoli Salad made with just 5 or 6 ingredients.
Of course one ingredient is bacon so it qualifies as Man Food 😉
I brought home the leftovers and Gary found it in the fridge and ate the remains of the day!

When I got home he asked me where I got that great Broccoli stuff.

Will you be shocked if I tell you that I’d never made Broccoli Salad?
Suddenly I had real motivation.
So I cornered the market on broccoli, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, and really good bacon for my culinary quest to make a salad that would rival the one I bought at Selland’s.

My first attempt was a flop.

I made the rookie mistake of barely cooking the broccoli.
It was OK the first day, but it couldn’t stand the test of time.  The next day it was, well, yucky.

Back to the cutting board and a second attempt.
Tonight I rolled out Broccoli Salad 2.0 and he loved it.

It’s a small thing, but love over time—like 30 years—is made up of lots of small things.

everyday kindnesses
simple attentiveness
tangible efforts

~and broccoli salad, don’t forget the broccoli salad.

Years ago, when women still ironed their husband’s shirts, a friend discovered that her husband appreciated her ironing a shirt for him each weekday, but really wanted the novelty of opening his closet on Monday and selecting from several already ironed shirts.

She listened and made the effort to say I love you enough to give you the simple pleasure of choice.

You never lose by loving.
You always lose by holding back.
Barbara de Angelis

What’s the last new thing you discovered about you man?
Now find a way to use that knowledge to say I love you, I care about your likes, I’m still paying attention to your happiness.

It’s so fun to discover new things about people we have known (seemingly) forever. That salad looks good.

  2. Kelly I simply love the way you show offJesus in your post. Whenever I have the opportunity to read someones post I look forJesus in the writing. I have took notice of you that for sometime now you have began to show Jesus in a different way and I simply love it. It is so refreshing and out of the box. I admire you and your writing thank you for being such a positive part of my life. Oh I will make the salad for Carolyn.

    Much love Tom

  3. Love this!

“It’s a small thing, but love over time—like 30 years—is made up of lots of small things.”

Isn’t that the truth! We had our 28th anniversary last month and I am so thankful and blessed by my guy.

Your salad looks fantastic. I make a similar salad, but use raw broccoli… it takes a long time to eat and the jaw workout is amazing! I think I need to steam or sauté the broccoli first?

    Love to you both 🙂

  4. John says:

Now I will be pondering all day about something for my wife! Salad looks yum!!

  5. That’s a good way to spend a Saturday 😉

  6. The second version has raw broccoli—don’t steam it. That’s what ruined the first recipe. Kate the chef says raw is the way to bliss where broccoli salad is concerned. She promises that it will be even better the second day. I’ll post the winning recipe.
Did the ironing story sound familiar?

  7. I’ll post the recipe for you!
Thanks for the encouraging words Tom. I think God leads us in a very natural way and we don’t always realize it’s Him directing us in our daily lives. That’s what happened with the broccoli salad. Proverbs 31:12 describes a wife who does good for her husband every day. That says two things to me: she’s made it a priority to know her husband well and she wants to be a blessing to him.
    Now that’s a recipe for a good wife 😉

  8. It’s a surprise to be surprised after 30 years!

  9. Dan Antion says:

We’re coming up on 32. Still some surprises left.

  10. Melissa D. says:

“It’s like having 10 little love letters in the closet” 🙂 first “marriage” story on serving my husband. I hadn’t been married a year. Good times!

  11. Hahaha…..well yes! I have sent his dress shirts off to a number of cleaners over the years but haven’t found the results to be favorable…no love involved. A mutual friend of ours told me many years ago that she used the time of ironing her husband’s shirts as prayer time for him. Good advice and another way to shower love.

Thanks for the tip on the broccoli. I’d love to hear your recipe.
    Enjoy your weekend!

  12. We’ve been married 19 years on Feb 24th.Thanks for the great reminder.

  13. I can’t believe you remember that!!! I find ironing kind of soothing, but then I’m weird about housekeeping.

  14. That’s great! Happy Anniversary to you both 😉

  15. You’re so sweet! Thanks! Looking forward to your next post. 🙂

  16. Congratulations! Looks delicious!

  17. Hi Christa, thanks. I see Jesus in your smile!
